Phonics Things
The Phonics Things book is made up of 80 original oil paintings paired with “story poems,” which offer an indelible experience to the reader through the engagement of art, poetry, and rich word lists. The content of this book and how it works is remarkable. It is used both in the school and home – making the school to home partnership in learning deliberate.
Each painting represents a letter or letter combination (33 vowel and consonant sounds, 24 consonant blends, 10 consonant digraphs, 8 vowel digraphs/diphthongs, and 5 r-controlled vowels). At the bottom of the page for each painting the reader finds a simple definition for the “thing” and a sample of figurative language relative to the “thing” (an idiom, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, or an analogy).
On the “text page” to the right of the painting, the reader enjoys a simple three stanza, zany poem, which requires the reader to visualize and make inferences. The poems have rich vocabulary and phrases.
And finally, to the right of the poem, the reader experiences a list of 9 words representing the featured sound. The words in these lists are primarily academic vocabulary – language arts, social studies, science, and math – yet include sophisticated nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs as well.
An oversized book mark guides students and adults to engage in learning activity, which strengthens their word study abilities.
Phonic Things is unique in the market, and has been recognized as an ABC book for the 21st century – “phonics 101” in the spirit of Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein.
Phonics Things Banners
The Phonics Things Banners is a “next generation” word wall combining phonemic awareness, phonics, and academic vocabulary. These banners present “Phonics 101” appropriate to grade level for grades K through 4. Students learn phonics to decode and apply their word attack skills. They do so through academic vocabulary across the content areas of language arts, social studies, science and math; and, the words are leveled appropriate to grade level. This classroom learning resource sets high expectations and provides continuity of learning from classroom to classroom and from one grade level to the next.
The Phonics Things Banners hang around the perimeter of a classroom or home environment for students to experience the “big picture” of phonics. These color-coded banners present the sounds of the letters of the alphabet (consonants-yellow and vowels-red), consonant blends (green), consonant digraphs (blue), vowel digraphs (pink), and r-controlled vowels (orange).
There is a 5 classroom set package of banners for Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, and Fourth Grade. There are 80 banners in a classroom set. Each banner presents a sound, an illustration for that sound, and three words representing that sound – most of the words are academic vocabulary that the students will need to know and understand in the subject areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
The Phonics Things Banners for each grade level look identical, except for the fact that the three words on each banner representing a sound are grade level appropriate. The banners’ words are “leveled” just as books are leveled for Sustained Silent Reading and Guided Reading programs. For example, the “short e” sound is presented within west, less, and ten on the Kindergarten “short e” banner; while the “short e” sound is presented within century, segment, and estimation on the Grade 3 “short e” banner.
